National Holidays & Observance Days Fun
Did you know we have a National Doughnut Day? It’s June 3rd. Or that we actually have a National Curmudgeon Day….. it’s tomorrow January 29th. I love fun and quirky little things that bring joy to me and my family’s life don’t you?! I had a moment the last week about seeking out our National Holidays & National Observance days to add some fun to our business (and of course marketing strategies). It was very interesting on how many silly, quirky, and forgotten ones there are. We love the fun ones but it is a great way to recognize and remember the history that has shaped our country and world too!
I have found the funnest links to a listing of the National Holiday and National Observance Days and have really enjoyed reading through them. I have looked at many, yes many to me is how long my attention would allow at 2am which boils down to 5… give or take a few, and have decided to use three cumulatively for 2016! The thing that is interesting is that they all are different, some focus on health awareness days, some on religious, others just fun and funky but all hitting the major ones. I even came across one where you could submit your own day to and just provide them with a why you think it should be added! This was the one with the most diverse “days” that was for sure. Hahahaha I’ll let you find that one as some might not appreciate all that it had to offer. 😉
Links for you!
Here are the links I will be using but would love to know of yours too. 🙂
NationalCalendar.com is one that you can choose either National Holidays or Observations Days by month. I have bookmarked it for easy retrieval!
Calendar-365.com is the very straight forward National Holidays, no fuss no muss. We all need a little order in our lives right?! It gives you the option of seeing years before and years into the future so if you are a planner, eh-hem don’t knock us man, you can get them set for years to come.
TimeAndDate.com is really cool….. not only does it give you some never before heard of (ok, I’ve never heard of) days but it also has the option of viewing world clocks and time zones, Sun and Moon calendars, Fun Articles and more. I poked around this one a lot.
Did I say three weeeelllll I actually meant four. Yep I forgot about this one until just now when I got an email.
DaysOfTheYear.com is one of the lists that has a day and sometimes multiple things per day you can celebrate. You can subscribe to receive email with what today is and you can also search for what is coming. I am sharing some of these days with my boys’ teachers as they would be fun for them to incorporate into school sessions! Because seriously who wouldn’t love to have National Chocolate Cake day at school where you can apply all of the days learning to it?
- You have reading about it…..Literacy and Geography
- Researching how it starts as a seed and grows and develops…..Science
- Measuring out the ingredients and making a double batch to share needing to adding fractions….Math, plus more! I just might have to volunteer that day….hmmmmmm.
Have fun with these and be sure to let me know if you find another great one to look at! Also if you haven’t already subscribed to our blog please do so and share it with your circle and “Like”us on Facebook so you can capitalize on the fun marketing we will be using our new found knowledge for! Who knows what kind of fun things we can pull our all natural handcrafted soaps, lotions, lip products and more into fun for everyone.
‘Til next time,
Cold Winter Weather Giving you Winter Skin?
Yikes! Can you believe we are already mid January? The new year is already on a roll and the cold has set in so chapped, dry skin and hair have begun. Whether you are enjoying this winter by being outside and participating in outdoor adventures or just making those walks/runs between your car, home or office winter is here and it is effecting your skin!I am getting calls, texts, emails and stopped on the street with questions on how to combat already chapped, dry skin and hair plus, how to prevent it!
It all comes down to the moisture content of your skin and hair is what I tell them. My first response is drink lots and LOTS of water so that your body can naturally flush the toxins and chemicals out of your body. After that let’s create deep retaining moisture so it gives a barrier against the harsh cold weather. Yes those up North have different conditions than those in the middle and southern states but the answer is the same! We offer a great line of products to help you combat Winter Skin so let’s break them down and explain what they can do for you and why they help.
Ingredients Are Key
Your skin is the largest organ your body has and we sometimes forget that so it is key that what you know what you put on your skin and why to get that healthy glowing appearance during any season.
It is always best to use only products that contain all natural ingredients so that what you are applying to your skin isn’t creating more of a problem (of course this is barring any allergies that one may have) through the use of harsh chemicals, synthetics and petroleum. Petroleum wicks away the Vitamins A & D from your skin which are vital nutrients needs to repair and replace damaged skin cells. When applying products with petroleum in them creates and endless cycle of dryness that can lead to chapped and even cracked skin.
There are many different levels of even natural ingredients so you want to ensure you aren’t using a “natural” ingredient that has actually been chemically stripped to produce it. It really defeats the purpose don’t you think? We use only the highest quality raw ingredients that have been thoroughly researched on the methods they use and where they come from. In return this gives us only the highest quality products we offer to you!
Meet My Hand & Body Lotion
Now let’s get down to what we have to help you! I would like to introduce you to my Hand & Body Lotion (it’s fabulous, just sayin’)! It is a rich cream where a little bit goes a long way, is easily absorbed by your skin, plus leaves your hands soft, supple and velvety smooth. Oh yes it is truly that good.
In private test marketing and from customer testimonials, I have had people tell me that they can wash their hands two to three times before they have to reapply. (individual results may vary) That is huge!
We use only the highest quality of all natural/organic based raw goods when making our Hand & Body Lotion. First we start off with using triple purified water that goes through a reverse osmosis water system to remove all of the heavy minerals and chemicals out of our water source. Our proprietary blend of oils offers up multiple levels of moisturizing benefits. We use Cocoa Butter, Sesame Seed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, and Vegetable Glycerine and here is why……
Cocoa Butter is an oil that is naturally soothing to the skin and is readily absorbed. It is high in fatty acids, a natural source of antioxidants, Vitamin E and other vitamins and minerals. Because of these great properties it sooth, hydrates and balances the skin. Plus, it helps to keep skin supple helping guard against cracking because applying topically it creates a barrier between skin and the environment. We also use it because we have found that it has helped our clients with eczema and dermatitis, but again individual results will vary.
Sesame Seed Oil:
Sesame Oil is chalk full of many different vitamins and minerals. We love it in our lotion because of the Zinc, Vitamin B6, and Copper. Zinc is a mineral that is essential in producing collagen giving your skin more elasticity. It aids in repairing damaged tissues, soothing burns and aids in skin related issues. The Vitamin B6 helps maintain the overall condition of your skin and has been know in treating a number of different skin problems including eczema, dry skin and psoriasis. Copper plays a significant role in the synthesis of collagen and is also actively involved in the the production of elastin keeping the skin flexible, helps avoid sagging and having wrinkles, giving your skin a more youthful appearance.
Sweet Almond Oil:
Sweet Almond Oil a light oil that penetrates the skin and hair easily. Because it has emollient properties, it has the ability to rejuvenate, soften and condition the skin and by doing such improving the tone and complexion. It also protects from sun damage and signs of aging. It is high in fatty acids and contains vitamins A and E making it well suited for problem, dry and itchy skin.
Vegetable Glycerine is amazing humectant! What is a humectant you say? Well it draws moisture out of the air onto the skin but also acts as a barrier and keeps the moisture in as well. Glycerine is easily absorbed and deeply penetrates making it soft, smoothing the skin texture and plumping it for a younger look. It is a perfect ingredient to combat dry and irritated skin.
In addition to these amazing ingredients we finish off the production of our lotion by using Specialty Denatured Alcohol (SDA-40D), BTMS Emulsifying Wax, and Fragrance Oils, Essential Oils or adding none of the above for those of our customers with allergies or scent aversion.
The SDA-40D is our full spectrum anti-mold, yeast, bacterial, fungal and viral preservative. Ever get to much lotion out of your bottle and then scrape it back in to save for a later date? Well you have just contaminated the whole bottle with what might be hanging out on your hands, yes people we are talking about germs, chemicals, food, etc. This is why we use the SDA-40D, as it doesn’t allow fun things to be grown in the lotion. No one and I repeat NO ONE wants to have a living petri dish alive and growing little nasties (microbial) that they then would put on their skin. Yuck! Plus it dissipates in less than 30 seconds and we have tested our lotions for two years ensuring that if there are no outside contaminates are introduced we maintain a sterile formula.
We use BTMS Emulsifying Wax to combine our lovely ingredients for you. It is 100% derived from vegetables and is all natural.
Last are the Fragrance and Essential Oils we use for fragrance purposes. Our fragrance oils are of the highest quality and are certified to us to be paraben, phthalate, and formaldehyde free. As for the essential oils we use only therapeutic grade to ensure the benefits of each oil.

My reference selection is too wide and arduous to post to this blog because it comes from many years of learning from books, lectures, personal experiences, magazine articles, published scientific papers, etc. But, that being said, I have found and have further investigated the research, that the livestrong.com website has posted on the bottom of all of their articles the resources with well notated references of their research that has a multitude of information.
Apple Pie From The Heart
Created By: Zig Reule, January 2, 2016
My husband and I have had the pleasure of being able to spend the last two weeks home with our boys Zig and Zag over their Winter Break from school and let me tell you it has been an adventure! We have watched it snow, played in the snow and then decided why not cook in the snow too?! Hence my son Zig’s creation of “Apple Pie From The Heart”.
We have been playing around with the new Traeger grill/smoker/wood oven we got for Christmas and oh my I never knew it would be soooooo easy to get Mr. Muscles to cook for me. Not just the meat portion but full meals and let me tell you I am gladly handing over my apron strings to this man! Let me start by saying….YUMMMM! Today was one of those days and Zig decided he wanted to add his own culinary skills to the dinner by creating his version of dessert. It was so unbelievably good I decided to share it will all of you!
Here it is all finished….but let’s get to the part of how to make it!! (Skip to the recipe)
Zig spent about 45 minutes researching the various types of apple desserts out there on the internet before concluding he can make his own. So we loaded up in our little silver rocket and off we went to the store with list in hand.
Shopping List: Apples, Cinnamon, Dark Brown Sugar, Granulated Sugar, Salt, Ginger, Allspice, Clove, Butter, Croissants, Aluminum Pan, Caramels, and 1/2 & 1/2 or Whole Milk.
After beating off the crowds at the market for the few items we did not have on hand we came home to the fabulous smell of the pork shoulder roast Mr. Muscles is cooking outside. Mmm….mmm….. makes my mouth water just thinking of it….. It came to mind that since the Traeger uses wood pellets to cook with we might want to check out what he is using. Just by luck Maple was in there and I got excited about the sweet smoky flavor that it would add to this dessert. Off to the kitchen we go!
Being a Mom that thinks every opportunity is a learning one I had Zig get a note pad and start recording all of the steps and measurements for everything so if we needed to adjust anything we would know where we started. He wasn’t super happy about this but oh well…..Mom can be sooooo harsh….gosh….
Zig started by washing the apples and letting them air dry on a towel while he prepared the filling.
Combine all of the filling ingredients in to a standard bowl and mix until all ingredients are evenly dispersed throughout the mixture.
Open the croissants and press two of the triangles together on the long angle forming a rectangle. Be sure to pinch the seam together well so it forms a solid piece and all of the deliciousness stays put!
Slice the apples in half and core. (Ok so this is where I took over for this small part.)
Divide the filling into four equal parts and pack it on to each apple. It will pack well as the butter will help to keep it together.
Now you will place one apple half on each of the croissant rectangles you made earlier. Starting on the short side start to gently pull the croissant up and around all sides of the apple creating an apple “package”. you will have excess of the dough that you will pinch together and then create the heart shape at the top of each apple half. Then place in an aluminum pan (I changed it to a square 8×8 pan as an after thought before cooking so that they didn’t cook together.)
Now off to bake these creations in a Maple wood fired oven. We baked them at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes. It was 2 degrees, yes seriously it was 2 degrees, outside when we put them on the fire so the temperature of the oven dropped to about 332 degrees when we pulled them out so I would error on setting the time for less and having to add some at the end.
As you can see we had one leak…..but oh well! Let these rest and cool while you make the caramel drizzle or simply let cool for about 10 minutes be for serving. Trust me these are rocket hot little apple pockets and save your taste buds so you can actually taste this amazing desert.
To make the Caramel Drizzle you will unwrap the 10 caramel pieces and place in a small sauce pan with the 1/4 c. of Half & Half/Whole Milk. You will heat this over a medium heat stirring constantly…..yes constantly…..as not to burn it.
Once the caramels melt take a spoon or spatula and drizzle the desired amount over the top of each apple.
Here is the finished result with a peek at the inside! Yes they are luscious and very rich and not intended to be eaten by those who are counting calories…. BUT…. ,shut the front door, they are delicious! I’ve included the nutrition facts just in case.
